Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing threat to global health. To combat AMR, the Ministry of Health (MOH) called for the development of a national plan against AMR. The
National Strategic Action Plan (NSAP) against AMR was launched in November 2017. The core strategies of the NSAP against AMR are: (1) Education and training, (2) Surveillance and risk assessment, (3) Research, (4) Prevention and control of infection, and (5) Optimization of antimicrobial use.
The Antimicrobial Resistance Coordinating Office (AMRCO) was established in 2018 to oversee the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the NSAP with focus on education and training, surveillance and risk assessment, and research. This is achieved by engaging with the One Health sectors (Health Promotion Board, Singapore Food Agency, National Parks Board, National Environment Agency, Public Utilities Board) to facilitate and coordinate AMR efforts across human, environmental, food and animal sectors. Additionally, AMRCO provides secretariat support to National Antimicrobial Resistance Control Committee (NARCC) and One Health Antimicrobial Resistance Workgroup (OH AMR WG). Going forward, the office aims to facilitate regional and international collaborations, develop regional capacity-building and share expertise with our partners in this field.
